If you’re a sucker for space news, you’re probably just as excited as we are about NASA’s recent findings of seven Earth-sized planets orbiting closely around a small, ultra-cool star. This new (well, new to researchers) solar system is one of the largest ever to be discovered outside of our own. Even cooler news? Six of the seven planets may have the right temperatures for liquid water to exist on their surfaces. Can you say, extra-terrestrial life?

No telescope? No problem!

As astronomers gather more information and take a closer look at these planets with ginormous telescopes, there are a few galaxies that you can enjoy seeing with your naked eye. They are truly spectacular considering the fact that in most cases on Earth we’re lucky to see beyond 12 miles at sea level due to haze, dust and the curvature of the Earth getting in the way.

The Milky Way

Sure, this might seem so familiar that it isn’t as exciting as other galaxies, but because Earth is in the Milky Way we can see it in all directions! The Milky Way holds the largest concentration of stars in a band stretching across the sky. Though quite diffuse, you may need to step away from your city’s bright lights and head to dark spot to really check it out. The center is in the constellation of Sagittarius.

The Andromeda Galaxy

Another galaxy best seen in the pitch black of night, this galaxy often referred to as M31, can be seen as a fuzzy patch in the constellation of Andromeda.

The Magellanic Clouds

Also known as Mubeculae Magellani, these are two irregular dwarf galaxies. Seen from the southern hemisphere, these two small galaxies are being accreted by Galaxy Way. In other words, they are orbing the Milky Way galaxy.

The Magellanic Clouds

Of course, there are other ways to get your space-fix even if it’s too cloudy to see any of the aforementioned galaxies – and you don’t even have to go outside! Our solution is always fashion.
