For Those Ready to Rock This Summer
So many of summer’s most iconic hits are from the 1960s and 1970s. There’s just something about that era that made it clear that life is better when the temperatures are extra hot. Oldies but goodies, we’ve included a few of them in our summer playlist such as The Lovin’ Spoonful’s Summer in the City made famous in 1965. That song was such a hit that Joe Cocker rerecorded it in 1977 with an equally laid back, almost reggae feel to it. Of course, Martha Reeves & the Vandellas reminded us that not all the good times are at the beach and many of the best times during the summer happen in the streets of your favorite city, with Dancing in the Street. This song was later recorded by the infamous duo of David Bowie & Mick Jagger. We couldn’t leave out Eddie Cochran or Jimi Hendrix from our list either. They epitomize summer in innumerable ways!

There’s no way we could have created a summer playlist without including Alice Cooper’s timeless School’s Out. Even if you’ve been out of school for years, that song swill always epitomize the freedom of longer, warmer days and infinitely fun summer nights.
We added Weezer’s summertime favorite Island in the Sun, as well as some newer songs like Brooklyn in the Summer by Aloe Blacc and California Gurls featuring Snoop Dogg & Katy Perry. Not to be confused with the Beach Boys’ California Girls, also a great summer song. Fun fact about those two tunes about California girls/gurls, The Beach Boys’ label Rondor Music was worried the two songs were just too similar and that people would get them confused. How anyone could get Snoop Dogg confused with anyone is a mystery. But nevertheless, they threatened to file a lawsuit against Katy Perry’s Captiol Records citing that the Beach Boys had a trademark on “I wish they could all be California Girls.” Thank goodness the lawsuit never happened and Brian Wilson (of Beach Boys fame) even called the melody “infectious” proving that no matter how hard you try, nothing can come between summertime and a great summer playlist.
